Up at the lake - The new Charlatans LP

NME reports that the new Charlatans album ‘Up at the lake’ has finally been recorded.
“It’s a very stripped down sound,” explained bassist Martin Blunt. “The songs are very haunting and stick with you. Back in December during some of the nights when we were in full recording it did remind me of ‘Lost Highway’ by [...]

Cheesy 80s power ballads - the definitive collection

What’s your favouite station to listen to whilst playing Grand Thefo Auto: Vice City? I find myself listening more and more to one that churns out the cheesy 80s power ballads. But it’s the same few tracks over and over which leads me to skip to the metal station to hear Judas Priest rip [...]

Jay Z -vs- The Beatles

I was blissfully unaware of the fantastic Grey album - a mix of Jay Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles’ “White Album”. EMI are doing their nut over it but on first listen it’s really a really cutting edge piece of art.

Air: Talkie Walkie

I was going to review Air’s new CD “Talkie Walkie” but I’m afraid it’s unplayable on any of my CD players. They seem to have incorporated some copy protection software that renders it unplayable in anything but the most basic of CD players. I can’t find any info on this from the band’s site and [...]

Farewell Mark and Lard

The news that Mark Radcliffe is moving to BBC Radio 2 will come as little surprise to those who’ve been aware of the steady increase in the quality of the programming on Radio 2 as opposed to the dumbing down occurring on Radio 1. It’ll be interesting to see if Radcliffe reverts to his glory [...]

No room at the nomadic in

As incredible as it might sound, my 20GB Creative Jukebox Zen is now full. I now need to decide what to do. It’s gonna be a case of archiving off tens of albums onto my pc hard disk or numerous CDs. This is crazy, too much music for a little guy like me to carry [...]

Aqualung, MK Stables

This intimate performance marked the start of what will hopefully be a year in which I see much more live music. And what a way to kick of the year. Not only do Aqualung hail from my home town of Southampton (thus automatically grating them exclusive license to a place in my heart) but they [...]

What a clever Jukebox

How does my MP3 player know how the link Leonard Cohen’s ‘Joan of Ark’ with The Smiths ‘Big Mouth Strikes Again’? The Nomad Zen would appear to be more intelligent that its sleek aluminium shell would have you believe. Indeed it would appear to have a musical knowledge to rival mine if the latest offerings [...]
